Have you ever played on a sports team , are you competitive at that sport ? Have you ever been forced into peer pressure , have you made choices based off of your friends or what they are dong ?Well your not the only one who has done all of these things. Imagine going threw all of these things and more while trying to get into a college , a large part of your life that determines how successful you are in life . Many things happen during Lonnie's process of trying to prove his father wrong mostly because he said Lonnie was worthless, and wasn't there as a father. Lonnie has many obstacles during his road to success.
Pressure plays a big part in the main character Lonnie's life . For example L's apartment is in a bad neighborhood mainly because he has a single mother because his father left him after he had his second birthday party. He feels as if he must be extremely successful just so he can rub it in his fathers face . First , sends his father an email of all of the colleges looking at him and text him saying '' i'm doing better without you , then would've been with you .'' Knowing that it was disrespectful on another level , if I were to say that to my mom , or dad I would either be on the floor or in the hospital . Next he quoted on an interview that he hated his dad with a passion , which changed the view of what people thought about him as well as his father . Next , he shows no type of emotion when he finds out that his dad is dead , only to find out [after his dad died] that his dad wasn't there for a reason that only benefited him and his mom lied to him.You can tell Lonnie's life is confusing .
Trying to be like everybody else , played a whole lot in L's life , mainly because he thought it was cool and he wanted to be that exactly . That also influenced him to do bad things that got him in trouble an abundance of times , which he thought were ok until they got in serious amount of trouble . One thing that LJ was reflected by , was the bad things that were in his school . For example , there were a lot of drugs in his school , that Lonnie took because he thought they were cool and he would be cool if he took them . Also , he stole from stores with the other players from his high school basketball team . Now you can see that what Lonnie did was because of his influential teammates in the wrong way .
Lonnie being extremely competitive also was a win as wells as a loss . Him never wanting to louse , or excepting the fact that he lost, or even if he's close to lousing . Him and his teammates can't stand to louse , if they do they either hurt themselves or others . Like when the team lost to Summerville high they had beat up the team after the loss , you can definitely say their sour losers . They also , did that to another team after a loss . Another bad thing that happened with Lonnie's competitive mindset , is when L broke someones arm because he thought he had fouled him . You can tell that Lonnie and his teammates are extremely competitive and take the game of basketball serious , I guess they can use the quote '' ballislife .''
With each obstacle in Lonnie's life he still managed to make it to the NBA [in the book] which was astonishing for me to hear that knowing all the things that happened to him as well as what he did , even though this is a book there are still a scarcity of things we can relate to the world as well as our lives . For example , I haven't but I know alot of people have not had a father that was there for them , some are doing pretty well and others aren't doing so well . Relating my parents to Lonnie's in the story they wouldn't tolerate me being disrespectful you could say I learned the hard way . I also think there are kids around the world that follow other people because they think whatever they are doing is cool , or whoever is doing it is cool . As humans we do that not knowing why people do such things , which I would find weird but then I would be a hypocrite . I also think many people are extremely competitive at a sport , some even at the level that Lonnie's at . I think , this proves my point that Lonnie had many obstacles during his road to success .
Ms. Warren, and Ms. Depalma I would like to thank you for this wonderful project it increased my vocabulary highly as well as my passion to write , this has also made it that I like to read more which is really cool if you ask me .
